Downtown San Angelo

The Santa Fe Depot and Railway Museum of San Angelo is nestled along the southern edge of the downtown area at 703 S. Chadbourne St. While trains are no longer a common sight in San Angelo, the city owes much of its early history to this little red building. In 1888, The Santa Fe Railway company brought much needed railway access to San Angelo, providing a gateway for supplies, livestock, and oil to flow in and out of the region. Without the influence of the railway, it is safe to say that San Angelo would not be what it is today. The access provided by the railway also played a key role in the selection of San Angelo as the site for Goodfellow Airforce Base in 1940. The Santa Fe Depot now serves as a railway museum that is open to the public on Saturdays.

The Railway Museum of San Angelo has several exhibits on display including the depot itself, a decommissioned train engine, railroad artifacts detailing over a century of history, model railroad displays, and a photo gallery.
